How does it work?

No single approach to training can be expected to work with all dogs or their owners. While my approach is not "one size fits all" it is a do no harm approach making use of positive reinforcement, classical and operant conditioning as well as learned behavior following LIMA guidelines.

To begin, send an email to jimo@greatdogk9training, putting your dog's name in the subject line, your name and address in the body of the email. I'll reply with a simple Q&A to complete. It's structured to provide a framework in advance of an in home evaluation. Upon receipt I'll reply with open dates/times and the evaluation is scheduled.

Where do you train?

Instruction is conducted in and around your home. Familiar settings are where most training issues are rooted and where they can best be addressed in context. Triggers can be managed and new, desirable behaviors shaped. Group classes are often a better choice for some dog owners and Rhode Islanders are fortunate to have their pick of several excellent venues. I do not presently provide group training however if I determine your training needs might be best met in one I will provide you with you with a referral. Additonally, if I determine your needs are best served by a certified behaviorist or vet behaviorist I will do my best to provide qualified referrals.

Can my family participate?

The short answer is, "It Depends" In general family members are encouraged to participate for a number of reasons, but primarily so that everyone in the house understands what the goals are and how they'll be addressed. However, some behavioral modification scenarios are best served when partipation is limited. Often this can be addressed during the evaluation.

Are dogs ever too young or too old to train?

The age of a dog is often less relevant than it's overall physical state.

You can and should begin training some basic behaviors with puppies as soon as you bring them home. Older dogs not only can still be trained to learn new behaviors, when the training is fun, older dogs often love learning new things or brushing up on old ones. If you're not sure, your dog is up to it, consult with your veterinarian.

Where's the phone number?

Email is understandably not for everyone however in an effort to do maintain clarity throughout the process from learning about your dog to scheduling, instructional notes, photo and video references, communication by email is simply crucial. If you're techincally challenged I'd ask you to seek assistance from a family member or friend.
